“Yes, I am an anti-Semite and anti-Zionist. I love the Jewish people and I have lived with them, but the American Jews are behind everything, the attacks in Iraq, the economic attacks in Europe, in America, in Asia, the Jewish-Americans are behind Bush, Clinton and behind the banks” Mikis Theodorakis
Another “symbol of this nation” has died and everyone is running around mourning him. The great music composer Mikis passed away the day before yesterday. The government of the New Democracy party and the entire political world have declared three days of mourning for his death. Not by coinsidence. His funeral will be attended by everyone without exception. Everyone will mourn his death together, everyone will look to benefit politically from his death. A disparate mixture of militarty junta nostalgics that today are current ministers of the government, left-wing patriots of the KKE and social democratic fossils of the party KINAL and SYRISA.
And really this is not a coincidence, as Miki’s political career represents the entire national popular community and Greek nationalism of every hue.
Some “educated” leftists say that the “last honours the first”, i.e. that Miki’s first years had a progressive course integrated in the cause of universal human emancipation and that he changed later. They forget, of course, his statements, even in those turbulent years after the civil war in Greece, where he asserted that his involvement with the left had a patriotic (and therefore classless) colour. Of course, considering that the entire post-civil war left adopted a patriotic/ethno-anti-imperialist discourse, culminating in its politics during the fascist dictatorship (1967-1974), Miki’s political trajectory undoubtedly matches that of the ethno-anti-imperialist left.
Some others, again through General Secretary. Koutsoubas, ran to show us an indulgence. A letter from Miki, in which he assures us that shortly before his death he was suffering from remorse and wanted, he says, to “leave this world as a communist”. The General Secretary, the 902.gr party website, the Rizospastis newspaper and the rest of the KKE media proudly reproduce the letter of condolence. They skip over the phrase of Theodorakis a little after the military dictatorship, “Karamanlis or tanks”. Their own capitulation is summed up in this phrase. They skip over his parliamentary seat of Theodorakis with Nea Demokratia in Mitsotakis’ government, his participation in the fascist rallies over the name of Macedonia, his founding of the nationalist group SPITHA, his statements that he is an anti-Semite because “American Jews are behind everything”, and that the k neo-Nazi criminals of the Golden Dawn “love Greece in a quarrelsome way”. The Communist Party of Greece, for the sake of its conservative petty-bourgeois voters based in the Athenian suburbs and in rural areas, shudders at the idea of writing something about all of the above. I wonder if the miseries of the last 30 years are so easily forgotten with a declaration of loyalty to the party? The honours for Miki’s funeral remind us (in a reverse way of course from “the last honours the first”) of those similar honours that PASOK and the whole political world did for another great patriotic symbol, Melina Mercouri, once the first lady during the Nazi Occupation, the lover of the biggest black marketeer in Athens (Yadikiaroglu) who enriched himself with the fortunes of Greek Jews and niece of Mercouri’s, leader of the National Socialist Party of Greece. Later she became a great “leftist” symbol.
So no matter how great a music composer Miki was, no matter how many awards he won in Moscow, no matter how many poets he set to music, we will continue to remember all the above and will always write in an argumentative way.
